Arup is for him to grow fromstrength to strength and to become one of the acknowledged painters in the history of water colour, Oil, acrylic and landscape that he so sensitively renders with strong impression style and surrealist way. If one looks at his works from the angle of the flow of colour and the detailed treatment of elements below it, blending the non-figurative aspect of Chinese calligraphic art with. European realism, we get a sense of the universality of this.expression as
it captures both the subjective perception of a formless universe and the definite forms that populate it. Within this broadparameter, he draws in other contrasts that are more subtle but no lessimportant. For example, there is the contrast between the mobile and the immobile, which is highlighted in works whichdepict statues of horse-riders with coach-horses and their drivers on the streets, or of statues of famous men with pedestrians on pavements. His capacity to deal with their proportions and details creates a harmony that renders the contrast that much more subtle.
It is the same subtlety and delicacythatis reflected in the relationship portrays in his landscapes, like two horses nuzzling each other while.the coach-driver looks away absently at people walking on the pavement.
Here he manages to focus in the ambiguities of relations and one wonders if the coach driver is looking away in embarrassment. or is on the lookout for human eye-contact. Perhaps both, as the openness of animalcontact often forces our eyes to look away. That this young artist is capableof communicating these nuances to us in the framework of a traditional urban landscape shows one how deeply he is able to draw one into the flavour of the city that one’s eyes begin to look out for the feelings its activities evoke in those living
there.
This capacity toget one to sink in from the landscape to the emotions of those peopling it brings us to his figurative works of and old woman with a basket, an old man with a stick or two workers sharing a meal, where one can sense the primacy of emotion over form in our art. These works are equally embodiments of moods as they are compositions of form andcolour.
This bring us then to the importance of absence in our artistic expression, as in his drawing of a hut with two empty pots outside it, reminding one ofthe occupants who are notthere. Indeed, it is this close relationbetween what is passing away with what is coming in that strikes one sharply in his drawings of trams, cycle rickshaws, motorcars, and three-wheelers that remind one that everything changes all the time like the
traffic lights on the streets but not necessarily in an orderly manner. This message permeates his drawings as a whole and confirms our view that he is one of the most varied and vibrant of our young watercolourist of Bengal today.
This is not a subjective view as the artist has won a number of awards and has exhibited in exhibitions both in India and abroad. His excellence of technique, sharp perception of the world around him and subtlety of expression assure us that his growth and development as an artist will continue and his will be an art to be reckoned with in years to come.
His formative years were spent on moderate small finite family in Kolkata. Where has an environment of etiquette andrule. Since, that time the nature has been only friend out of his house. This ideally experience gave him an understanding of man’s relationship with nature and help him develop a strong work ethic. If one looks at the journey of artist Arup Lodh and his works of art till date, it is quite clear that Arup is an accomplished watercolour artist.
Arup’s linkage with Kolkata runs deep and he is inseparable from this wonderful city. His paintings of Kolkata reveal the emotional connect he has with this city of joy. I have had the privilege of observing Arup’s work over the years and I continue to wonder and appreciate the bond he has with the place.
Arup Lodh has portrayed through his paintings the symbols which made Kolkata the charming queen of the East. You will find beautiful paintings of the trams in Kolkata, views of the Howrah Bridge, Victoria Memorial which is a truly iconic image, the action on the race course, Kolkata cityscapes and many more such paintings.
The multi coloured city of Kolkata became the source of subject of some painters in the colonial India. British painters like charles Doyly, Thomas Daniell, William Daniell and few others have captured the myriad events and places of this vibrant city in line and colour. Even in post-independence age many Indian artist’s has also portrayed the diverse phenomenon of the city of joy in their own stylistic idioms. This legacy is still continuing
by their successors. Arup Lodh is one of the flourishing torch bearer of this genre of art. Content of delineations are mostly evolved concerning road way scenes of metropolis. Arup has a nostalgic feelings and special interest for this subject. In his childhood he heard many stories of Kolkata from his parents, that made a lasting impression in his mind. The present representations are the combination of memories and his visualization, evoke a mystic passionate feelings, which seems to be covered with a soft veil of past and present together. Apart from the above
Arup has also emphasized on colour, composition, line, tone to translate the visuals on the paper. Sometime used one particular colour creating many of its shades, which beget translucent atmospheric effects. His favourite medium is watercolour by which he express his inner feelings with all its character of transparency and sensuality.
Largely, an artist Arup is deeply involved in painting, which enabled him to gain tremendous skill, and that made confidence to keep him away. He is quite young now, but during his short journey he has received some prestigious awards from India and abroad for the excellence of his watercolour paintings. Since 2003 Arup has participated in many group exhibition, art camps and also held 15 one man show before. However, the art works of the present display is almost all about diverse moods and movements of the heritage Kolkata and do hope that it would be a feast for the eyes of the viewers.
Not surprising therefore, that Arup, at the young age has acquired a popularity in national and international
contemporary art world that is as unique as it is enviable. Kolkata and its nostalgia, abundantly visible to the day, has been a muse to many painters over the years.
Arup's I affaire Kolkata results in breathtaking depictions of his architecture, his sights, smells and sounds that you can almost smell and hear when you view his paintings. Needless to say, his command over his medium is rare, and leaves you craving for more, as he unfolds one layer after another of this mythical, mystical city.
In his superb depictions of Calcutta, Arup uses a large and varied visual vocabulary: part traditional, part modern, part reinvented and part unabashedly harkening back to earlier forms. What is remarkable is that Arup has not only presented nostalgic and haunting images of Kolkata, he is in fact making a strong appeal to the viewers and to all of us to make sincere efforts to restore the lost glory of Kolkata.
I hope that not in the distant future, Arup Lodh will paint the second avatar of the glory days of Kolkata.
